Kathmandu: Donald Trump is anticipated to surrender at Fulton County Jail on Thursday evening, facing racketeering and conspiracy charges related to his attempts to overturn the 2020 presidential election results in Georgia. This information comes from two individuals familiar with the matter.
To deflect attention from the ignominy of surrender, the former president employed a tactic to turn the event into a spectacle. He orchestrated negotiations with his lawyers to schedule the booking during prime viewing hours for cable news networks.
While Trump had previously announced on his Truth Social platform that his arrest would occur on Thursday, the decision to hold the event during prime-time hours was reached recently after his legal team met with Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis on Monday.
Last week, Trump became a criminal defendant for the fourth time when a grand jury issued a comprehensive 41-count indictment. The charges include participating in a criminal enterprise and committing election fraud in a bid to reverse his 2020 electoral defeat.
Leveraging his penchant for garnering high television ratings, Trump seeks to extend the coverage of the event by potentially addressing cameras and reporters following the surrender, according to the sources.
This strategy, making each of his criminal case surrenders a spectacle, serves to both discredit the charges against him and manipulate the narrative surrounding them. It is consistent with his pattern of seizing opportunities to present himself as a defiant victim of partisan investigations.
While his preference would be to avoid facing charges, Trump's response to being indicted is to project an air of defiance and rally his supporters by portraying himself as the target of biased inquiries, in need of their political and financial backing.
At the Fulton County Jail's Rice Street facility, where defendants from Fulton County are typically processed, the surrender process involves standard procedures such as taking a mug shot, fingerprinting, and recording height and weight.
Trump allegedly requested his legal team and the US Secret Service to secure an exemption from being photographed during the process, although it remains uncertain if such special treatment will be granted. Fulton County Sheriff Patrick Labat had previously indicated that Trump would be treated no differently.
A spokesperson for the Trump campaign has not yet responded to requests for comment. -Agencies
